The Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) and Women's Foreign Policy Group (WFPG) will be hosting Turkish Parliamentarian Pelin Gundes-Bakir for a luncheon briefing and discussion regarding Turkey's role in Syria and the Region. Currently before Congress and the Senate there are ten Syria-related resolutions. H.Res. 632 commends Turkey which has received and is caring for over 200,000 Syrian refugees. MP Gundes-Bakir will be visiting Washington DC after providing similar briefings at the Council of Europe's Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons, where she serves.

TURKEY'S ROLE IN SYRIA AND THE REGION
Dr. Pelin Gundes-Bakir was elected to the Turkish Grand National Assembly as a MP for Kayseri in the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in March 2011. In this capacity, she serves on the Committee on Public Works, Development, Transportation and Tourism and previously served as the Chairwoman of the AKP Higher Education Working Group.
Dr. Gundes-Bakir is also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, where she was elected to the Bureau of the European Democrat Group, which determines policies and strategies of the Group. She has been the Group's spokesperson on critical issues such as conflict in Syria, refugees, migration, and terrorism. Dr. Gundes-Bakir also serves on the Council of Europe's Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons; Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development; Sub-Committee on Environment and Energy; and, Sub-Committee on Cooperation with Non-European Countries of Origin and Transit for Migrants.
Prior to her election, Dr. Gundes-Bakir was a professor of structural engineering and earthquake engineering at Istanbul Technical University, where she received her PhD. Dr. Gundes Bakir has published more than 70 papers and four books. She has also lectured at Bogazici University, Berlin Technical University, and Alexander Technological Institute in Thessalonika, Greece. Well respected in her field, Dr. Gundes-Bakir serves in the editorial boards of four scientific journals in the United States and Europe and on the peer review boards of more than 20 international scientific journals. She also holds a Masters in Civil Engineering at the Imperial College of the University of London, served as a post doctoral fellow at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, and received training in Emergency Management and Earthquake Engineering from FEMA.
